What This Essay Type Tests
These essays ask "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of X" or "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" The two question types require different approaches and students who confuse them lose marks immediately.
Two Different Question Types
Type A — "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages": Present both sides equally and objectively. Do not express a strong personal preference. Conclude by saying which side you find more significant overall.
Type B — "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?": You must take a clear position — yes they do, or no they don't. This is an opinion essay disguised as an advantages/disadvantages question.
Read the question twice before you start writing. Identify which type it is.
