The Speed Problem

The most common reason students fail IELTS Reading is not vocabulary or comprehension — it is time. 60 minutes for 40 questions across 2,500-3,000 words means approximately 90 seconds per question including reading time. Most students read too slowly and run out of time on Passage 3.

Measuring Your Reading Speed

Count how many words you read in one minute when reading academic text. The average person reads 200-250 words per minute. To comfortably complete IELTS Reading you need to read at least 300 words per minute for general comprehension and 150 words per minute for careful, analytical reading.

If you are reading slower than this, speed is your priority in training.

Techniques to Increase Reading Speed

Stop subvocalising. Most people read by silently pronouncing every word in their head. This limits your speed to your speaking speed — approximately 150 words per minute. Train yourself to read with your eyes only, without internal pronunciation.

Read in chunks. Instead of reading word by word, train your eye to take in groups of three to four words at once. Your peripheral vision can process words either side of where you are directly looking.

Do not reread. Trust your first reading. Rereading sentences wastes time and usually does not improve comprehension significantly. If something is unclear, move on and let the context of the next sentence clarify it.

The Passage Structure Shortcut

Academic passages follow predictable structures. The introduction states the topic and usually contains the main argument. Each body paragraph has one main point in the first sentence. The conclusion summarises without adding new information. Reading these key sentences first (skimming) gives you 70% of the information in 20% of the time.

Vocabulary Building for Reading

Unknown vocabulary is the second biggest cause of slow reading. When you encounter an unknown word, use context to guess its meaning — do not stop to look it up during the exam. After practice sessions, record unknown words and learn them.

Focus on academic vocabulary — the Academic Word List (AWL) contains 570 word families that cover approximately 10% of academic text vocabulary. Learning the AWL is one of the highest-return investments for IELTS Reading preparation.
