Academic vs General Training Reading

Academic Reading: Three long passages of 700-900 words each, taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Topics are factual and academic. Aimed at candidates applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.

General Training Reading: Three sections. Section 1 contains two or three short texts about everyday topics. Section 2 contains two workplace-related texts. Section 3 contains one longer, more complex text similar to Academic passages. Aimed at candidates migrating to English-speaking countries or applying for secondary education.

Both versions have 40 questions and 60 minutes. No extra transfer time — answers must be written on the answer sheet during the 60 minutes.

Why Reading Is Different From Listening

In Listening you hear the answer. In Reading you must find it — and the passage is designed to mislead. The correct answer is almost never in the same words as the question. You must recognise paraphrasing and synonyms constantly.

The 60-Minute Time Plan

Passage 1: 17 minutes (easiest — most questions answerable quickly) Passage 2: 20 minutes (moderate difficulty) Passage 3: 23 minutes (hardest — most complex vocabulary and arguments)

Many students spend too long on Passage 1 and run out of time on Passage 3 where the questions are worth the same marks.

The Most Important Skill — Skimming and Scanning

Skimming: Reading quickly to understand the general topic and structure of a passage. Read the title, first sentence of each paragraph, and last paragraph. Takes 2-3 minutes. Do this before answering any questions.

Scanning: Moving your eyes quickly across text to find a specific piece of information — a name, a date, a number. Do not read every word. Look for the target information only.

Most students read every word of every passage. This is the single biggest time management mistake in IELTS Reading.
