A balanced essay that clearly separates benefits from drawbacks, while explicitly declaring which side outweighs the other.

Paragraph Structure

Introduction

In recent years, Topic has become increasingly common. While there are certainly some drawbacks to this trend, I believe that the benefits significantly outweigh the disadvantages.

A strong opening that introduces the topic and immediately establishes your stance on whether the pros beat the cons.

Body Paragraph 1 (Advantages)

On the positive side, Topic offers several clear benefits. Most importantly, it allows for Reason. A good illustration of this is Example, which shows how Result. Furthermore, Second Benefit.

Group the advantages using structured linking words. Explain how the benefit actually improves the situation.

Body Paragraph 2 (Disadvantages)

Nevertheless, it is important to consider the potential downsides. One major concern is Drawback. If this is not managed properly, it could lead to Consequence. Additionally, Second Drawback.

Introduce the downsides using a strong transitional phrase ('Nevertheless'). Explain the negative consequences logically.

To summarize, despite the risks associated with Drawback, the advantages of Benefit make it a positive development overall. The benefits comfortably outweigh the negatives.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Writing unbalanced paragraphs

Writing 200 words on advantages and 40 words on disadvantages looks unbalanced and disorganized.

Fix: Aim for roughly the same length for both BP1 and BP2 to show structural control.

Using simplistic transitions

Using 'First advantage', 'Second advantage', 'Bad thing' limits vocabulary scores.

Fix: Use 'On the positive side', 'Conversely', or 'Nevertheless'.
