Understanding the IELTS Listening Test

How the Listening Test Works

The IELTS Listening test is 40 minutes long — 30 minutes of listening plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. It consists of four sections with 10 questions each, totalling 40 questions. The recording is played only once — you cannot replay any section.

The Four Sections

Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context — booking a hotel, enrolling in a class, reporting a lost item. This is the easiest section. Questions are usually form completion or note completion.

Section 2: A monologue in an everyday social context — a tour guide describing a location, a manager explaining workplace procedures. One speaker only.

Section 3: A conversation between two to four people in an academic or training context — students discussing an assignment, a tutor giving feedback. This is more complex with overlapping ideas.

Section 4: A university-style lecture or talk on an academic subject. This is the hardest section. The vocabulary is academic and the information is dense.

Question Types You Will Face

Form and note completion, table completion, flowchart completion, sentence completion, short answer questions, multiple choice, matching, labelling a map or diagram, plan or diagram labelling.

The Band Score Conversion

Correct answers out of 40 convert to band scores exactly like Reading:

• 39-40 correct = Band 9
• 37-38 = Band 8.5
• 35-36 = Band 8
• 32-34 = Band 7.5
• 30-31 = Band 7
• 26-29 = Band 6.5
• 23-25 = Band 6
• 18-22 = Band 5.5
• 16-17 = Band 5

The Most Important Rule

You lose marks for spelling mistakes. If the answer is "neighbour" and you write "neighbor" — you lose that mark. British spelling is used in IELTS. Practice spelling key vocabulary.

Strategy Overview

Read the questions before the audio starts. Predict what type of answer is needed — a name, a number, a place, a date. Listen for signal words that indicate the answer is coming. Write answers as you listen — do not try to remember and write later.
