Note and Form Completion Strategies

Golden rules and common tricks.

Why This Question Type Matters

Note completion and form completion questions appear in every single IELTS Listening test, usually in Sections 1 and 2. They are the most straightforward question type but students still make avoidable errors.

The Three Golden Rules

Rule 1 — Stay within the word limit. Instructions always specify a limit — "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER." Writing three words when two are allowed means zero marks even if your answer contains the correct information.

Rule 2 — Use exact words from the recording. Do not paraphrase. If the speaker says "annual membership fee" and the answer requires two words, write "membership fee" not "yearly cost."

Rule 3 — Check your spelling. Proper nouns — names, places, streets — are often spelled out by the speaker. Write each letter as it is said. If you miss one letter you lose the mark.

How to Prepare Before the Audio Plays

Read the form or notes carefully. Identify what type of information each gap needs — a name (capital letter), a number (digits), a date (format), an adjective (describing word). This prediction helps you listen for the right category of answer rather than every word.

Common Tricks the Examiner Uses

Distraction answers: The speaker mentions a wrong answer first then corrects it. "The meeting is on Tuesday — actually, sorry, it is Wednesday." The correct answer is Wednesday. Many students write Tuesday.

Synonyms: The question says "cost" but the speaker says "price" or "fee." The answer is the same but the signal word is different. Train yourself to recognise synonyms.

Spelling out names: When a name or address is spelled out, write each letter immediately. Do not wait for the full spelling before you start writing.

After the Recording

Use your 10-minute transfer time wisely. Check every answer for spelling. Check you have not exceeded word limits. Transfer answers clearly — examiners cannot give marks for illegible writing.
