When to Use the Passive Voice
Passive voice is appropriate and expected in specific IELTS contexts. Using it correctly demonstrates grammatical range. Avoiding it entirely limits your score. Overusing it sounds unnatural.
When Passive Voice Is Expected
Academic Task 1 maps and process diagrams: "A new hospital was constructed." "The raw materials are collected and sorted."
Formal discussion of social issues: "Many workers are being displaced by automation." "Education funding has been significantly reduced."
When the agent (who did it) is unknown or unimportant: "The building was demolished in 2015." "The data was collected over a six-month period."
When to Avoid Passive Voice
Personal opinion statements: Do not write "It is believed by me that" — write "I believe that."
When the subject is clear and specific: "The government reduced funding" is stronger and more direct than "Funding was reduced by the government."
When it makes the sentence confusing or awkward.
Forming the Passive Voice
Present: is/are + past participle — "Jobs are being lost." Past: was/were + past participle — "The factory was closed." Present perfect: has/have been + past participle — "Standards have been raised." Future: will be + past participle — "New policies will be introduced." Modal: should be, must be, can be, may be + past participle — "This issue must be addressed immediately."
Band Comparison
Band 5: "They built a new road. They removed the old buildings. They added a park."
Band 7: "A new road was constructed, the old buildings were demolished, and a park was added to the area."
Band 9: "The old residential buildings were demolished and replaced by a major arterial road, while a public park was established in the northeastern corner of the development."
