IELTS Two-Part Question Essays

Two-part questions (often called double-question essays) are similar to direct question essays, presenting a premise followed by two separate questions. You must address both questions in equal depth, typically dedicating one full body paragraph to each. Make sure your thesis statement answers both questions directly.

Band 9 Essay Structure

1. Introduction

  • Sentence 1: Paraphrase prompt (introduce the background trend).
  • Sentence 2: Dual Thesis (answer both questions in different clauses of a single sentence).
  • Sentence 3: Outline (introduce the structure of the essay).

2. Body Paragraph 1 (Question 1 Answer)

  • Topic Sentence: Address the first question directly.
  • Explanation: Provide logical steps explaining why.
  • Example: Provide an example.

3. Body Paragraph 2 (Question 2 Answer)

  • Topic Sentence: Address the second question directly.
  • Explanation: Elaborate on consequences or options.
  • Example: Provide an example.

4. Conclusion

  • Sentence 1: Summary (summarize answers to Question 1 and 2).
  • Sentence 2: Closing prediction (provide a prediction based on the trend).

Examiner Key Advice

Spend time planning your ideas before writing. Double check that your answers are completely logical and that your transition between the two parts is smooth.

Ensure both questions are answered in the introduction.

Spend roughly the same number of words on both body paragraphs to maintain balance.
