In an IELTS Opinion Essay, you are asked to state your position clearly and defend it throughout. Band 9 Essay Structure

1. Introduction

  • Sentence 1: Paraphrase the prompt (rewrite the topic in your own words, showing lexical range).
  • Sentence 2: Thesis statement (explicitly state your opinion: "I completely agree/disagree that..." or "While some argue X, I contend Y...").
  • Sentence 3: Outline sentence (briefly introduce the two main points you will discuss).

2. Body Paragraph 1 (First Main Point)

  • Topic Sentence: Introduce your first reason.
  • Explanation: Explain why this reason holds true in 2-3 sentences.
  • Example: Provide a concrete, professional example (studies, historical trends).
  • Link: Connect the paragraph back to your central thesis.

3. Body Paragraph 2 (Second Main Point)

  • Topic Sentence: Introduce your second reason.
  • Explanation: Provide supporting logical steps.
  • Example: Provide a matching example.
  • Link: Re-anchor back to your thesis.

4. Conclusion

  • Sentence 1: Restatement (restate your thesis using different synonyms).
  • Sentence 2: Summary (summarize your two main body arguments).
  • Sentence 3: Final recommendation/prediction (leave the examiner with a thoughtful closing thought).

Examiner Key Advice

Never sit on the fence without a clear justification. While a concessions approach (agreeing with some parts) is possible, the easiest and safest way to score Band 8+ is to choose one side clearly and support it fully. Ensure that you do not introduce any new points in your conclusion paragraph.

Avoid using personal examples like "my uncle" or "in my country". Instead, use broad phrases like "sociological studies indicate" or "national statistical records show".

Ensure you use strong cohesive connectors like "Furthermore", "Consequently", "In contrast" to link your points.

Vary your sentence structure—use a mix of complex clauses, conditional structures, and passive voice.
