Mixed Charts

Handling two chart types in one response.

What Mixed Charts Test

Mixed chart questions give you two different types of visual data — for example a bar chart and a line graph, or a pie chart and a table. The challenge is synthesizing information from both visuals into a coherent response that makes meaningful connections between them.

The Core Skill — Synthesis

The key to a high score with mixed charts is not describing each chart separately in sequence, but finding connections between them. Does the bar chart's data explain the trend in the line graph? Does the pie chart's proportions correspond to patterns in the table? Examiners reward responses that link the two visuals analytically.

Structure

Introduction: Describe both visuals together in one paraphrased statement — what they both show and how they relate.

Overview: Identify the most significant finding from each visual AND a connection between them if one exists.

Body Paragraph 1: Describe the most significant data from the first visual with specific figures.

Body Paragraph 2: Describe the second visual, actively linking back to data from the first wherever a connection exists.

Linking Language for Mixed Charts

"This corresponds to the trend shown in...", "This pattern is reflected in...", "The bar chart data supports the finding that...", "Interestingly, despite the rise shown in the line graph, the pie chart reveals that...", "Both visuals suggest that...", "While the first chart indicates X, the second chart demonstrates Y."

Common Mistakes

Treating each chart as a completely separate task and writing two disconnected paragraphs.

Only describing one chart in detail and mentioning the other briefly.

Forgetting to write an overview that covers both visuals.
