What Tables Test

Tables present a large amount of data across multiple categories simultaneously. The challenge is selecting the most significant information rather than trying to describe every cell. Selectivity and intelligent grouping are what separate high-scoring responses from low-scoring ones.

The Key Skill — Selection

A table might have 30 data points. You cannot and should not describe all of them. Your job is to identify the three or four most significant patterns and describe those. Examiners actively penalise responses that list every number without demonstrating analytical selection.

What to Select

The overall highest and lowest values across the entire table. The most striking differences between rows or columns. Any unexpected patterns that contradict the general trend. Values that are notably similar across categories.

Structure

Introduction: State what the table shows — what is being measured, what categories exist, and what time period or comparison is being made.

Overview: Identify the single most striking overall finding without using specific figures.

Body Paragraph 1: Describe the most significant row or column comparison with specific data.

Body Paragraph 2: Contrast with a second notable pattern, comparing across different rows or columns.

Useful Table Vocabulary

"The table reveals that...", "The data indicates that...", "Notably...", "Of particular interest is...", "In contrast to X, Y shows...", "Across all categories...", "The most striking disparity is between..."

Common Mistakes

Describing every single data point in order — this is mechanical and demonstrates no analytical thinking.

Using only simple sentences for each data point — vary sentence structure to combine comparisons.

Failing to make cross-category comparisons — always link rows and columns to each other.
