The IELTS Reading Test — What You Are Actually Being Tested On

The Reading test is 60 minutes, 40 questions, 3 passages. Academic Reading uses complex texts from journals and books. General Training uses workplace notices, advertisements, and articles. Both reward the same core skill: locating and interpreting specific information quickly.

The Single Biggest Mistake: Reading the Passage First

Do not read the passage from beginning to end before looking at the questions. You will forget most of it and waste 10 minutes. Instead:

1. Read the title and any headings to understand the topic
2. Read the first question
3. Scan the relevant section of the passage for the answer
4. Move to the next question

Time Allocation Per Passage

Passage 1: 15 minutes (easiest — bank time here) Passage 2: 20 minutes (moderate difficulty) Passage 3: 25 minutes (most difficult — allow more time)

If you spend more than 2 minutes on any single question, circle it and move on. Come back at the end. Unanswered questions score zero. Guessed answers sometimes score one.

True / False / Not Given — The Most Dangerous Question Type

This is the question type that costs the most marks for the most students. The distinction between False and Not Given is precise:

False means the passage says the opposite of the statement. Not Given means the passage neither confirms nor contradicts the statement — the information is simply absent.

If you cannot find any reference to the statement's content in the passage, the answer is Not Given. If you find a reference but it says the opposite, the answer is False.

Do not use your outside knowledge. Everything must come from the passage.

Matching Headings — Work Backwards

For Matching Headings tasks, read the list of headings first. Then read the first paragraph and match it. Do not try to match all paragraphs at once in your head. Work paragraph by paragraph.

The main idea of a paragraph is usually in the first or last sentence. If you cannot find a clear match, move on and return — the process of elimination often solves ambiguous paragraphs.

Spelling Counts in Short Answer Questions

If the answer requires you to write a word from the passage, copy it exactly as it appears. Do not paraphrase. Correct information spelled incorrectly is marked wrong. Check your spelling before moving to the next question.

The Transfer Time Trap

In Reading (unlike Listening), there is no separate transfer time. You write your answers directly on the answer sheet as you go. Do not write all your answers at the end — if you run out of time you will lose marks on questions you actually knew.
